Carleton Place firefighters are reminding residents to make sure carbon monoxide alarms are installed on every level of their home.
Assistant Fire Chief Matt Anderson says the requirement came into effect Jan. 1, making this the first full year many residents are adjusting to the updated rules.
The department has been using community events and public education to spread the message.
Anderson says residents should not only make sure alarms are installed, but also confirm they are working properly and have not reached their expiry date.
The fire department is also offering help to anyone who is unsure whether their home meets the requirements.
Firefighters can visit homes to check both smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and help residents determine when they need to be replaced.
Anderson says the goal is to make the process simple and ensure families have working protection throughout their homes.
