Smiths Falls staff believe a farmers’ market can succeed in town, but say the municipality does not need to run it.
Hometown News reports council received a feasibility study Sept. 14 that found the independently operated Smiths Falls Market by the Rideau already provides a solid foundation.
The market is currently based at Lower Reach Park and includes producers, artisans and crafters.
Staff say past markets struggled less from lack of interest and more from instability, including changing locations, schedules and operating models.
The current market appears to be drawing steady traffic and consistent vendors.
Three options were presented to council: continue with the current arrangement, create a municipally supported pilot with the existing organizer, or establish a permanent town-run market.
Staff recommend against the third option.
Some councillors indicated support for helping the existing market through promotion, a stable town-owned location or limited in-kind assistance while keeping day-to-day operations independent.
Any pilot proposal would return to council with details on costs and support before moving ahead.
