One of Lanark County’s most spectacular fall destinations is about to become a gathering place for people who want to enjoy nature — and help protect it.
The Mississippi Madawaska Land Trust is holding its annual Fall Colours Walk at Blueberry Mountain on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Speaking with LanarkLeedsToday.ca’s Lynda D’Aoust, executive director Ramsey Hart said joining the organization has brought him back to work that has long been close to his heart.
The land trust now has 18 properties under its stewardship across the Mississippi-Madawaska region, including its newest acquisition, the Micanac Nature Reserve south of Maberly.
Board chair Stephen Kotze told D’Aoust the organization’s work is about more than simply owning land.
That connection with nature will be front and centre at Blueberry Mountain.
The five-kilometre round-trip trail winds through forest, passes a waterfall and finishes with a short, steep climb to the lookout.
When D’Aoust asked Kotze why the annual walk has become such a favourite, he pointed to the view.
MMLT staff, directors and volunteers will be on site to answer questions about conservation, wildlife and the landscape. Visitors can also stop at the Circle of Gratitude, honouring people who have supported the organization.
Leashed dogs are welcome, light refreshments will be available and donations can be made at the welcome desk.
Hart told D’Aoust those donations play an important role in keeping the work going.
The walk takes place at Blueberry Mountain, 502 Hills of Peace Road near Lanark. A rain date is set for Sunday, Oct. 4.
For D’Aoust, Hart and Kotze, the message is simple: enjoy one of the region’s most beautiful places, learn a little more about the land around us, and help make sure those natural spaces are still here for generations to come.
