Lanark County is refurbishing its HVAC system at their main building, completing a long-overdue overhaul.
The last time the system was touched was in 2007, with an engineering report noting the chiller no longer works and the natural gas-fired boilers are also at the end of their service life.
CAO Kurt Greaves says there’s going to be environmental benefits as well.
Greaves says the building has experienced progressively worsening humidity
issues over the past several summers, and an engineering report revealed one of the chillers has completely failed, cutting cooling capacity by 50%.
The chiller will be replaced with an air-source heat pump capable of providing both air conditioning and shoulder-season heating, the second cheapest option.
Greaves recommended the $687,000 route over the like-for-like replacement due to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions the new units will produce.
Council awarded the purchase of the equipment needed for the work, before returning next year to issue a tender for the installation.
