Smiths Falls is taking steps to make it easier for people to find where loved ones are buried, as the town works to modernize its Hillcrest Cemetery records.
Director of Community Services Stephanie Clark confirmed during a council meeting that cemetery records are not yet available online, but new software has been purchased to improve public access and administrative efficiency.
The update came during a presentation on a proposed overhaul of the town’s cemetery bylaw, which dates back to 1998.
The proposed bylaw changes would also clarify how burial rights can be transferred, cancelled or resold.
Clark said the current rules require the town to buy back burial rights, while the proposed changes would allow third-party purchases through the town.
The town has not yet provided a timeline for when the digital records will be available to the public.
