Wayne Baker says Tay Valley Township needs to strike a better balance between controlling taxes, maintaining services and keeping residents informed.
Baker has represented Sherbrooke Ward on council for four years and is now running for deputy reeve.
Speaking with LanarkLeedsToday.ca, Baker said he wants greater involvement at Lanark County council while continuing to represent township residents.
One of his biggest concerns is affordability.
Baker says municipal taxes have increased by 26 per cent over the past four years, something he believes council could have handled differently.
Baker acknowledges the township has faced significant expenses, including increased policing costs and adjustments to staff compensation.
He says the municipality now has strong reserves and a solid 10-year capital plan, but future spending needs careful consideration.
Baker also supports reducing the number of closed council meetings and recording livestreamed meetings so residents can watch them later.
Another important part of his campaign is independence.
Baker says he is not part of the groups of candidates supported by either reeve candidate.
He believes municipal projects should be evaluated carefully, including whether some purchases or construction work can be delayed without affecting essential services.
His goal is to protect taxpayers while ensuring the township remains financially prepared for the future.
