Frank Johnson says Tay Valley Township needs a different approach to municipal spending, public consultation and long-term planning.
Johnson is running for deputy reeve after eight years of involvement with the township, including serving as president of the Little Silver and Rainbow Lakes association and participating in municipal working groups.
Speaking with LanarkLeedsToday.ca, Johnson criticized the current council’s handling of taxes and legal expenses, saying residents deserve greater accountability.
He believes council needs better ways to hear from the public, particularly seasonal residents and those unable to attend meetings.
Johnson wants council meetings recorded so residents can watch them later. The township confirms that livestreaming is now available.
He also wants a closer examination of municipal reserves, legal spending and the township’s approach to resolving disputes.
Johnson argues that working groups should report directly to council, allowing residents with specialized knowledge to contribute to decisions.
He also supports exploring ways to attract businesses and new residents, including greater flexibility around housing.
On recreation, Johnson questions whether contributing to a new facility in Perth would be the best investment compared with developing options within Tay Valley.
He says changing the township’s direction will require more than one councillor.
Johnson says his goal is a council that listens more closely to residents while taking a more careful approach to spending and future development.
