Halloween is about costumes, candy and spooky fun, but for some children, getting from door to door can be a challenge. Carleton Place is offering families an accessible alternative this year, with a free Halloween celebration designed to welcome ghosts and goblins of all abilities.
The Town of Carleton Place, Downtown Carleton Place BIA and Turpin Kia are teaming up for their annual Trunk or Treat event on Saturday, October 31st, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Market Square, 7 Beckwith Street.
Instead of navigating steps, porches and uneven walkways, children can collect treats from decorated vehicle trunks at Market Square on Beckwith Street. The event also features Halloween-themed games, a photo zone and a live Halloween show by Monkey Rock Music.
The free event provides another way for families to celebrate together, particularly those who may find traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating difficult. Children with mobility challenges, sensory sensitivities or other accessibility needs can face barriers that many families take for granted.
Carleton Place has also been working to make accessibility and inclusion a broader community priority, with its multi-year accessibility plan focused on identifying and removing barriers to participation.
For families looking to make Halloween a little easier and more enjoyable, the message is simple: there should be room for everyone in the fun, regardless of ability.
With decorated vehicles, games, music and plenty of Halloween spirit, the Market Square gathering offers a chance for children and caregivers to enjoy the celebration in a welcoming community setting.
