The Eastern Ontario Rail Trail Loop is receiving national recognition for its efforts to turn existing trails into a major cycling destination.
The project has received the Destination Development Award from the Economic Developers Association of Canada. The award was presented to the Ontario’s Highlands Tourism Organization, which leads the regional partnership.
Initiated in 2024, the project brings together seven municipal and non-profit partners to develop a 320-kilometre cycling loop connecting Renfrew, Lanark and Frontenac counties, Rideau Lakes Township and Smiths Falls.
Once complete, the route is expected to become Canada’s longest rail trail loop.
Project partners are working on trail surface upgrades, consistent signage, improved trailheads and amenities, as well as a Trail Town model that encourages local businesses to participate.
The goal is to connect railway history, local food and tourism experiences with the region’s natural landscapes, encouraging visitors to stay longer and spend money in rural communities.
Smiths Falls Tourism Coordinator Jeff Murphy says the town’s location at the junction of the Eastern Ontario Rail Trail Loop and Cataraqui Trail makes it an important part of the regional project.
Since 2024, partners and the federal government have invested more than $200,000 in the initiative, with an additional $30,000 in annual contributions from partners.
Once fully developed, the trail is projected to attract more than 200,000 visitors annually and generate over $100 million in total economic impact.
