There is good news for college students at Perth’s Algonquin College campus: a threatened strike at all of Ontario’s colleges has been averted.
The colleges and the union representing faculty say they’ve agreed to enter binding interest arbitration, and the strike that was scheduled to begin today has been called off.
Binding interest arbitration sees a third-party negotiator examine both sides’ offers, then provide a binding compromise agreement drawing from both sides. It differs from binding arbitration where only one offer is chosen.
The Ontario Public Service Employees Union and the College Employer Council say all work-to-rule strike activities have also ended. They had been in place since December.
Negotiators for the two sides met virtually yesterday and issued a statement on their agreement late last night.
That means its business as usual at the schools across Ontario.
