After concerns from local environment groups halted Lanark County’s plans to replace the heating and hot water systems at three social housing units with natural gas, the decision to resume the project was made this week by the slimmest of margins.
It would cost an estimated $691,000 to replace the existing natural gas system with air source heat pumps.
Councillor Richard Kidd says that’s money that could be better spent snatching up more affordable units.
In her report, Director of Social Services Emily Hollington told council the units would need to use natural gas regardless in the winter.
In the end, council voted 8-7 in favour of moving ahead with the original plans, while the opposed voted to seek RFP’s regarding air source options.
