After reports that the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital (PSFDH) was set to close the Perth site’s emergency department nightly for several weeks due to staffing shortages, the hospital released a statement about staffing.
That same statement said there would be no closures of departments or suspensions of services right now.
The hospital echoed comments from hospitals and health care facilities across the province saying there has been a critical shortage of staff since the beginning of the pandemic. More and more nurses, and other staff are leaving the profession.
The hospital says physicians and management have been working together to find creative solutions, with the goal of keeping all services running. They also hope to guarantee patient and staff/physicians safety at all times.
A statement says the PSFDH says the following nursing recruitment actions are in action:
– Agency nursing
– Creation of additional (new) nursing positions to support all areas of the
hospital
– Financial incentives
– Reaching out to retired nurses
They say that they’ll continue to consult with staff, physicians on solutions to address the staffing crisis.
We will have more on the staffing in the coming days and weeks.
