
The final day to submit nomination papers to run for Mayor, Reeve, town council, or school board trustee in municipalities across our listening area was Friday afternoon, and there are many races to watch and a few acclamations.
Perth
In Perth there are four competitors running for mayor. Incumbent John Fenik, Councillor Judy Brown, Stephanie Drummond and Chad Kelford. Deputy Mayor Ed McPherson will be acclaimed to the position. There are also 11 names on the list for councilor. Five will be elected.
Smiths Falls
There are two names on the ballot for Mayor in Smiths Falls with incumbent Shawn Pankow and challenger Justin Duhamel both registered. Fourteen candidates have registered for council.
Carleton Place
In Carleton Place there are three vying for the chain of office. Incumbent Doug Black is seeking re-election, councilor Toby Randell is running, as is newcomer Andreas Foustanellas. Sean Redmond is seeking re-election as Deputy Mayor, while current councilor Andrew Tennant is also seeking that office. There are also thirteen candidates vying for council seats around the horseshoe.
Rideau Lakes
Rideau Lakes will have a two-person mayoral race as incumbent Arie Hoogenboom takes on Councillor Carolyn Bresee. As for Council, there are four running in Bastard and South Burgess (two will be elected), two running in South Elsmley (Marcia Maxwell and Jeff Banks have been acclaimed), five in South Crosby (two to be elected), and three in North Crosby-Newboro (two to be elected). Election Day if October 24th.
Mississippi Mills
Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry is headed for another four-year term as she is running unopposed. The race is on for Deputy Mayor as Incumbent Rickey Mininille faces off against David Hinks, and Paul Watters. There are several candidates registered to run in each ward as well to serve as councillors.
Drummond/North Elmsley
Drummond North Elmsley Reeve Steve Fournier will also be acclaimed. Both Ray Scissons and Paul Coutts will be acclaimed for North Elmsley. Paul Kehoe, John Matheson and Sean Kennedy are vying for two council positions in Drummond.
Montague Township
In Montague Township, all three council positions have been acclaimed by non-incumbents, while the race is on for Reeve after long-time Reeve Bill Dobson announced he will not be running. Vince Carroll, Klaas Van Der Meer (current deputy reeve), and Karen Francis Jennings (current councillor) are all vying for the chain of office. Jeffrey Carroll (another current councillor); David Marion, and Pat Dolan are running for Deputy Reeve.
Beckwith
Long-serving Beckwith Reeve Richard Kidd will serve four more years as no other candidates registered. Brian Dowdall (a current councillor) and Incumbent Sharon Mousseau will vie for the deputy Reeve’s chair. Seven candidates will seek to be elected to three council seats.
Merrickville-Wolford
Incumbent Mayor Doug Struthers faces off against Anne Barr and current councillor Michael Cameron in Merrickville-Wolford. There will be several candidates running in each of the municipality’s two wards. Two will be elected in each.
Lanark Highlands
In Lanark Highlands, Peter McLaren is seeking re-election as Reeve. He will face James Parsons and Wes Pugh in the election. Adam-Michael Peters, Bill King (a current councillor), and Dennis Munroe are all running for Deputy Reeve. Several candidates are running in the municipalities four wards, with two acclamations.
Tay Valley
There will be a new Reeve in Tay Valley as Reeve Brian Campbell will not seek re-election. Current Councillor Rob Rainer will face Roxanne Darling. Current Councillor Fred Dobie is taking on Gordon Hill for Deputy Reeve. There will also be elections in each of the three wards.
