Not many volunteers risk their lives nearly every time they set out to help but Jeff Dean, a long-time volunteer firefighter in Perth, does.
Jeff says volunteering in general is in his family’s blood. Growing up he heard that whatever you give you get back tenfold in different ways.
He took stock of what he likes to do and how he could use that to find some way he could give back. He’s a big team sports guy, and thought the physicality of being a volunteer firefighter and working with a team would be a good match. It has been for several years now.
As for the danger of the vocation, Jeff says training from the department’s Deputy Chief Publow went a long way.
Again referencing how much he likes being part of a team, Dean says working with others, and all the skills they bring to the table, also makes him feel safe while doing what they do.
And he and the firefighters are looking for help. If you can volunteer he’d like you to give it a try.
He says they’ve got people from all walks of life who are volunteer firefighters, so don’t let your day job hold you back.
