Residents of Lanark County gathered last night in Carleton Place to Take Back the Night, the annual walk in the town that sees them demand that a woman’s right to walk our streets safely at night be upheld.
Women, men and children took to the streets together as a voice united.
Lanark County Interval House Executive Director Erin Less said, “The voices were strong, the support outstanding and the sense of unity as a community was amazing. We are grateful to lead this annual March that includes an honouring of those lives taken, the courage to move the issues forward and the capacity to inspire the next generation.”
She told Lake 88 the walk is a rare event, in that didn’t cancel once over the course of the pandemic.
Lee also says it gives people the opportunity to come together to fight for a common goal.
The march took place this year following the inquest into the murders of three women in Renfrew County and the resulting recommendations. Lee says the walk gives them the chance to begin the conversation about those recommendations.
We will be highlighting those recommendations one by one here on Lake 88, starting next Thursday, which is the seventh anniversary of the murders.
