Current TCT route
Lanark County’s economic development committee recommended Wednesday to move a portion of the Trans Canada Trail (TCT) to the Ottawa Valley Recreational Trail (OVRT).
The proposed route would see the OVRT take over where it meets the existing TCT at Coleman in Carleton Place.
The OVRT would also go through Beckwith to Kelly Jordan Road in Montague to Carroll Road in Smiths Falls.
The county originally proposed these changes years ago but were turned away. It was last year when the OVRT asked the county if they were still interested.
County CAO Kurt Greaves said there’s a couple of reasons they recommend this move.
About 70 of 100km of trail would be cut, but only 8% of the remaining 30km would have roadside walking, as opposed to the entirety of the original 100km stretch. It would also reduce the municipalities travelled through from seven to three.
The county is passing along this recommendation to each municipality seeking support.
