We continue our look at each recommendation made by the Culleton, Kuzyk & Warmerdam inquest into intimate partner violence (or IPV).
Today we look at no. 8, which falls under the system approaches, collaboration and communication category.
It requires all justice system participants who work with IPV survivors and perpetrators to be trained to interact with them with a trauma-informed approach.
Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee says this is something that’s already in the works.
Lee adds that how people react isn’t necessarily a reflection on commitment. It has do directly with the trauma suffered. So, if someone were to miss an appointment for any reason, those helping that victim would take a full-view approach to determine if anxieties, fears or other factors are in play. This training guides them through that process.
She says this is happening now in Lanark County.
Lee says an example of this approach was the inquest itself. There were supports in the room should anyone need them. Breaks were taken when needed, and it was held in a comfortable venue. Everyone involved moving forward can implement some of those approaches.
