The Town of Smiths Falls joined the growing chorus of lower-tier governments speaking out against the province’s Bill 23 – More Homes Built Faster Act.
Senior Planner Karl Grenke outlined the bill Monday night and voiced his own concerns surrounding some of the proposed changes outlined.
Councillor Chris McGuire said the bill, which the province says will streamline housing development, misses the mark.
Outsourcing additional responsibilities to consultants, the removal of development charges for certain projects, limiting appeal rights on zoning applications, and the reduction of input from Conservation Authorities are among chief concerns.
Mayor Shawn Pankow didn’t leave his thoughts unheard.
The Association of Municipalities Ontario released a statement last week opposing the bill.
Perth council shot it down as well, with deputy mayor Ed McPherson saying the passing of the bill would mean “ruin” for Perth and many other towns.
