We continue our look at each recommendation made by the Culleton, Kuzyk & Warmerdam inquest into intimate partner violence.
Today we look at no. 13: Require all police services to immediately inform the Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) of Initmate Partner Violence related charges after they are laid, and provide any relevant records.
Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee says weapons are power for abusers.
Lee says the legal system issues many orders against individuals banning them from having or even holding a weapon. She says this recommendation is about making sure communication around weapons, and when they’ve been used by abusers, is clear for the chief firearms officer and others dealing with IPV cases.
She also says when it comes to weapons, stakeholders, including responsible gun owners, have to be involved.
Making sure that all involved with IPV cases have the correct information and expanding the reach of that information when it comes to weapons is a good start, according to Lee.
