We continue our look at each recommendation made by the Culleton, Kuzyk & Warmerdam inquest into ending intimate partner violence (or IPV) in Ontario.
Today we look at no. 21: Develop a plan for enhanced second-stage housing for IPV survivors.
Interval House Executive Director Erin Lee says for many survivors of trauma and violence, moving right back into their community is not always the safest plan.
Lee says Second Stage Housing is so valuable, especially when just over 40% of victims return to situations that are unhealthy or unsafe for them, thanks in large part to the current housing crisis.
In Lanark, there are second stage housing units in Perth and Carleton Place. It allows victims and survivors (and their children if that’s the case) a safe and secure place to transition back to everyday life. In some cases, it can take more than a year.
