Neil Doef and his family have settled with Hockey Canada nearly a decade after an injury left him paralyzed.
The former Smiths Falls Bear crashed headlong into the boards in 2014 while representing Canada in the World Junior A Challenge, crushing part of his spine.
The 26-year-old’s relearned how to walk but with limited mobility and lacking fine motor skills.
According to The Globe and Mail, Doef’s family was told he would only receive up to $30,000 because his injury didn’t fit the wording of Hockey Canada’s policy which carries up to $1 million worth of coverage for paralysis.
A settlement was reached days before a jury trial was scheduled in Ottawa, the terms were not disclosed.
