Lanark County council was provided an overview of their parameters for the Better Homes Lanark program as a feasibility study continues.
The goal of the program is to retrofit existing homes with energy efficient solutions, with a focus on low-income households and older homes using electricity or natural gas.
Climate Environmental Coordinator Elizabeth Gallant says it’s a worthwhile program as nearly half of county residents spend double the national average on energy costs.
Gallant says they have an idea of what an eligible candidate looks like.
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities would fund up to 80% of associated costs and up to half of the loan amount, while the county has to commit to at least 20% of cost coverage.
Depending on the contribution, the program could see up to 400 retrofit projects completed.
