A Portland woman has sought support and received direction from Rideau Lakes council to deal with feral cats in the village.
A letter submitted to council by Ida Chvostek asked for help to establish a catch-spay-return program operated by community volunteers.
Councillor Paula Banks met with Chvostek and members of other nearby villages experiencing a similar plight and suggested a coordinated approach.
Mayor Arie Hoogenboom says this isn’t an issue council’s in the past gotten involved with.
Eastern Ontario Cats is the foster-based, 100% no kill organization Banks was referencing.
Council would debate implementing a program during 2024 budget discussions should they receive a community grant application by Chvostek, which is the course of action they’re recommending she take.
We’ll have comments from Chvostek next week.
