Earlier this week Lake 88 spoke to Ida Chvostek on In Focus regarding the feral cat problem in Portland and by extension, Rideau Lakes.
Chvostek is asking council to help fund a trap, neuter, release program which would be overseen by local rescue Eastern Ontario Cats.
In previous years when the topic has been brought to chambers, council’s opted to not get involved.
Chvostek told us that there’s been a community call for action.
The cost to neuter a cat is upwards of $150, which is why she says having the infrastructure of a rescue to handle the program that has financial support is the best route to take.
Chovstek thinks this is something council could support if they wanted to.
Eastern Ontario Cats has taken council’s direction and applied for a community grant to implement a program.
Council will debate the matter during 2024 budget discussions.
