The Upper Canada District School Board wants better EQAO results this year.
It’s an area of concern for the board they’re trying to address, says Executive Superintendent Eric Hardie.
The board has generally struggled with the test by comparison to others across Ontario.
They think one of the reasons is students being tripped up by how the questions are phrased on the test.
Director of Education Ron Ferguson says they’re addressing that this year by implementing similar practice questions.
Among other things, the board’s noticed the phrasing of questions during the test has confused a portion of the student body, so in preparation for this year’s test teachers will ask practice questions in a similar way.
Last year, over half of primary and junior students fell below the provincial average for math, another key area of focus for the board, which has brought in additional staff dedicated to EQAO prep.
