“It places a lot of pressure on migration,” Lanark County aging population raising concerns

Lanark County’s population is projected to continue to grow and age over the next three decades.

An update of the Growth Management Study highlighted Eastern Ontario and the county’s projections on various fronts, from housing and employment to population.

Adam Fischer of Watson and Associates Economists says the county will have to rely on migration to make sure it’s not top heavy with older generations

Fischer  says the latest population forecast from the Ministry of Finance far exceeds what they projected just three years ago.

14% of the county’s population was over the age of 75 in 2021 and by 2041 it’s expected to reach 22%, with nearly half of the population over the age of 65.
