Olga Lalovenko fled to Canada from Ukraine last year with her children to be safe from the war.
She’s since become engrained in the Carleton Place community, and spoke to us about the province mandating education on Holodomor for grade 10 history students in 2025.
The first Holodomor was a man-made famine implemented by Joseph Stalin’s regime which killed millions of Ukrainian people through starvation in 1932-33.
It’s a horrific part of history, but one Lalovenko is happy is being taught and even further, more can be learned about how far humans will to live are pushed.
Lalovenko has familial ties to ensuing Holodomor’s.
Lalovenko said most, if not all, Ukrainian-Canadians can trace back their roots to a Holodomor and have passed down stories to share about the horrors they saw.
