Smiths Falls will be applying to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) for a feasability study into their biochar program.
Director of Public Works and Utilities Paul McMunn explained more about the process.
Over the past two years a program has operated at the town’s compost site, where they lay out the biochar to catch runoff and mitigate salt running into water streams when town staff dump collected snow.
The funding application would explore the idea of building an operating a permanent biochar site.
Currently they’re operating a smaller scale project at the compost site alongside Rideau Environmental Action League and the Rideau Round Table, which they use to collect snow runoff after it’s been collected and dumped by staff.
