The town of Smiths Falls has a feral cat problem.
Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough says last year they picked up about 100 stray cats and transported them to LAWS, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
They’ve learned there’s an excess of 100 cats by the train tracks people are either feeding or interacting with.
And as the problem grows, Chesebrough says LAWS is being overrun.
It’s an issue that continues to pop its head up throughout the region, and local municipalities including Smiths Falls met this week to brainstorm ways to address it.
The town’s bylaw officers responded to 164 animal control calls in 2023.
