Recommendation no 65 from the jury in the inquest to ending intimate partner violence in Ontario once again speaks to probation services.
This time it as that the services mandate is reviewed to prioritize:
a. Condition compliance,
b. Victim safety,
c. Offender rehabilitation.
Executive Director of Lanark County Interval House Erin Lee speaks with us each week about each recommendation. She also spoke at the inquest as an expert witness.
She says this recommendation is all about making sure conditions are met.
Lee also says this condition, and the others involving probation services arms them with concrete fundamentals of the system.
She says in many situations people ignore systems and consequences, so the system needs to be improved so that consequences are delivered to a non-compliant offender, which in turn keeps victims safe.
