Recommendation number 68 from the Jury in the Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam inquest into ending Imitate Partner Violence (IPV) is the final aimed at the parole system in our province to ensure the safety of the public, and former victims.
It says the province must ensure collaboration between corrections and probation staff to improve rehabilitation and risk management services.
Consideration should be given to two-way information sharing including of case notes, and opportunities to order treatment in institutions for those with existing probation orders who are on remand.
Every week our expert, Executive Director of Lanark County Interval House Erin Lee, guides us through the impact each recommendation could have on the issue.
She says it’s about making sure everyone is on the same page.
Lee who testified at the inquest added that some work will have to be done to ensure the recommendation is met.
The 86 recommendations were released on June 28th, 2022. Since then, some have been adopted by the province while others, like declaring Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic were rejected. Lanark County responded by becoming the first County in Ontario to make the declaration.
Dozens of communities across the province followed suit and recently an NDP sponsored bill passed second reading and moved to committee that would finally see IPV declared an epidemic in Ontario.
