Many health groups want Ontario to make a new plan for handling alcohol as the province gets ready to relax its alcohol rules.
By 2026, you’ll be able to buy beer, wine, cider, and ready-to-drink cocktails in convenience stores and grocers in Ontario.
Back in 2018, Premier Doug Ford said he’d let more places sell alcohol right before he won the election.
Now, over a dozen health groups are asking for a plan for alcohol, including Ontario’s top doctor, Dr. Kieran Moore.
Groups like the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health say that alcohol causes lots of deaths and hundreds of thousands of hospital visits in Ontario each year.
Ontario says it’ll spend $10 million on making sure people drink alcohol safely as part of its big plan to spend $3.8 billion on mental health over 10 years.
