The OPP have confirmed that the remains found in the Mississippi River earlier this week were those of a missing 52 year-old Carleton Place Man.
Matthew McGrath’s sister, Melissa Rainsville confirmed his identity on the Facebook page dedicated to finding him.
She wrote “Matthew is home. It is with extremely heavy hearts that our search for my brother Mathew has come to an end. Sadly, this past Sunday, May 12th, Mother’s Day, Mathew’s body was discovered in the Mississippi River in Carleton Place, Ontario, his hometown.”
The Lanark County Detachment had been searching for Matthew since he went missing on January 20, 2024. He had last been seen two days earlier leaving his home in Carleton Place.
A post-mortem examination has determined no signs of foul play, and it appears he had been in the water since he disappeared.
Police will not be releasing any more information.
As Matthew had no estate, his sister has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to lay him to rest. You can make a donation here.
