Recommendation number 74 from the jury in the inquest into ending Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in Ontario is the first directed at the Office of the Chief Coroner.
It says the Coroner must ensure that the Domestic Violence Death Review Committee reviews its mandate with a view to enhancing its impact on IPV and provide the DVDRC with improved supports.
Lanark County Interval House ED Erin Lee is a member of the committee. She says the work is already underway.
She says that’s only the beginning of the work they’re doing to improve. Part of that is ensuring they have the right resources in place per case.
They would of course tailor each group of experts to the specific case they’re reviewing at the time. That, says Lee, improves their recommendations greatly.
She says part of role the DVDRC is to make recommendations to change the system so they don’t create a scenario where these types of femicides can occur.
