Lanark County OPP has arrested and charged a 24-year-old man after he was seen carrying a handgun in Perth. The incident happened just before 3:30 p.m. on June 11, 2024, on Gore Street, near Mill Street.
Officers quickly responded to the scene, located the man, and determined that the gun was a replica and not dangerous. They also seized a knife from the individual.
The man, from Lanark Highlands Township, has been charged with two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on July 22, 2024.
Replica weapons are considered a weapon if used or intended to be used to commit an offense. Police officers must make split-second decisions when faced with individuals armed with what appear to be real firearms.
