Shelters Movers Ottawa helps victims of intimate partner violence get away from their housing situation not only in the city, but in our local communities as well. A Lanark County extension of the chapter was established a few years ago thanks to a partnership with Lanark County Interval House.
Chapter Director Ray Eskritt knows it’s one of the hardest times in one’s life to try and flee domestic abuse.
The volunteer-based group averages 22 moves per month, including one weekly in rural areas. Eskritt told Smiths Falls council there’s a big need for their work.
Eskritt says while they’re called Shelter Movers Ottawa, they’re frequently out in the county and the valley, and there’s added barriers in place for rural communities, such as communication, internet, and public transportation shortages.
