The heatwave in Lanark and Leeds is pretty much behind us, so now it’s crucial to check on our gardens now that temperatures are easing.
Here are some tips to ensure your plants recover and thrive.
First, inspect your plants for heat stress signs, such as wilting, yellowing leaves, or scorched edges. These indicate your plants are still struggling with the aftereffects of intense heat. Prune any damaged leaves and stems to encourage new growth.
Watering is essential, but avoid overwatering. The soil may still be dry a few inches below the surface, so water deeply and less frequently to promote root growth. Early morning is the best time to water, reducing evaporation and allowing plants to hydrate before the day’s heat.
Mulch your garden beds to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Organic mulches, like straw or wood chips, are excellent choices.
Finally, check for pests, as stressed plants are more susceptible to infestations. Aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies may have taken advantage of the heat-weakened plants.
By following these tips, your garden will bounce back and flourish after the heatwave.
