Area beaches will no doubt become quite busy with the kids finishing up school. The health unit is there to make sure its safe, as they begin their beach water monitoring program for another year, next week.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Linna Li says they test once a week, which gives them an idea.
One thing to keep an eye out for are Blue-green algae, which are tiny, plant-like organisms that also can be found in ponds, rivers, lakes and streams. They can cause skin rashes if you come in contact with it, as well as stomach issues if you drink it. They can also be toxic to pets.
Senior Public Health Inspector Sarah Burris says keep your eyes peeled.
Water conditions aren’t too bad in our listening area. The health unit says our water is safe most of the time; however caution must always be taken when swimming in any natural water source.
