Ontario claims thousands of child-care spaces have been rejected due to a cap on for-profit spaces under its $10-a-day childcare deal with Ottawa.
The province’s Education Minister, Todd Smith, along with the association representing Ontario’s municipalities, has sent a letter to federal Minister Jenna Sudds, requesting the removal of this cap.
Ontario’s current commitment under the $10-a-day system includes a 70% non-profit and 30% for-profit space ratio. However, this cap has led to the denial of many child-care spaces, affecting families across the province.
Minister Smith and municipal leaders argue that lifting the cap would create more child-care opportunities, benefiting parents and children in Ontario. The letter emphasizes the urgent need for flexibility to meet the growing demand for affordable child-care solutions.
The province hopes that the federal government will consider their request to ensure that more families can access the $10-a-day childcare program.
