Dr. Kieran Moore, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, has issued a public warning about certain recalled Silk and Great Value brand plant-based refrigerated beverages. These products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
On July 8, 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall, urging consumers to check the CFIA website for a full list of affected products. The list is being updated regularly as the investigation progresses. You can check that website here.
Dr. Moore advises Ontarians to inspect their fridges for these products and to discard or return any found immediately. He emphasizes not to consume the recalled beverages, as Listeria contamination does not alter the smell, taste, or appearance of the food.
So far, nine cases of listeriosis have been confirmed in Ontario, with five hospitalizations linked to the outbreak. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and cautious to prevent further illness.
