The Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) has issued a Water Safety Statement to alert the public about high water levels and unsafe conditions in the region. This notice is especially important for anglers, canoeists, hikers, children, and pets.
Due to heavy rains in June and July, flows and levels are much higher than usual across the MVCA jurisdiction. Although flooding is not expected, the high water levels are causing dangerous conditions, particularly near watershed dams. These areas pose significant risks, and recreational users are urged to stay away.
MVCA is actively managing the increased flows through dam operations. However, these high levels are expected to persist for the next two weeks as excess water moves downstream. Any additional rainfall will extend these conditions.
Residents and visitors are advised to avoid swimming, boating, or fishing near dams to prevent being caught in strong currents. Parents should supervise their children and remind them of the dangers.
