Perth council will not eliminate its Grants to Others funding stream to community organizations like The Table Community Food Centre and YAK Youth Services after discussion Tuesday.
Staff pitched cutting funding by 20% annually over five years before ending the program in the interest of cost savings, a move councillor Gary Waterfield was against.
Councillor Jim Boldt didn’t feel the idea was a shot at these groups in particular, which includes Cornerstone Landing and the Perth Public Library, rather a conversation that needed to be had.
The councillor proposed locking the annual donations as-is until the end of council’s term but that didn’t get off the ground.
Over $591,000 was allocated to 14 community organizations in the 2024 budget.
Waterfield said there are other areas of the budget they should look at for cuts before looking at reducing support for these organizations.
