The final recommendation from the jury in the inquest into ending Intimate Partner Violence in Ontario is number 86. It asked that all parties named in the recommendations reconvene to discuss implementing the recommendations.
That was to be carried out a year after the recommendations came out. They were released on June 28th, 2022.
Lanark County Interval House’s Erin Lee has joined us to comment on each of the 86 recommendations. Lee says they met in Pembroke where Luke’s Place hosted advocates and stakeholders from across the province.
Lee says while there were reports of successful implementation, that wasn’t always the case.
Lee says looking back, that left many questions for stakeholders. However Lee noted that one provincial office stood above the rest.
The privacy commission also made changes based on the recommendations as did others, and Lee notes that the National Action Plan on ending IPV has been launched.
Municipalities and counties also stepped up. We’ve noted in the past that the first to declare Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic was here in Lanark County.
That said Lee says the meetings after the first year were dificult especially with concerns raised about the provincial government.
Year two saw another meeting that saw positive movement, but challenges remain.
Educating the public must also continue. 88.1 myFM is proud to be a part of that process. We will continue to bring you stories about the efforts to end IPV on a regular basis. Our commitment to the cause is not ending with this, the final installment in this series.
