Licensed to build: Smiths Falls exploring axing business licence requirements

Smiths Falls is looking at cutting red tape by eliminating the need for individuals to acquire a business license before setting up shop.

Senior Planner Karl Grenke explained their existing purpose.

However a staff report says the requirement to obtain one now has little enforcement and no penalties for businesses that do not have one, and they know of a few locales that do not.

Councillor Stephen Robinson’s on board with getting rid of them.

Carleton Place and Perth do not require them in their towns, and staff members from each were consulted.

All other requirements for business owners like having fire and health inspections would remain in place, and the town would ask new businesses to register with them to help their database.
