The Upper Canada District School Board swore in the two student trustees for the 2024-25 school year at their inaugural meeting.
Maheen Riaz from Brockville Collegiate Institute made her pledge.
“I’m looking forward to building more of a bond between the schools since we have such a big school board,” Riaz said in a media release. “I want to make sure that everyone is heard and promote diversity around the district.”
She’ll serve as the Chair of Student Senate Meetings. Annika Squires from Thousand Islands Secondary School is the second trustee and followed suit.
Squires will serve as Vice-Chair.
Added Squires, “For me, my plan is to create an open environment for students who have learning disabilities. As a student who has a learning disability, I want to help the in-between students. Those who are in the academic classes and willing to learn, they just might not know what they need to succeed.”
