88.1 myFM has learned a law firm in Smiths Falls fell victim to a phishing scam in July.
Smiths Falls Police Service confirmed the firm, who they declined to name citing privacy, had their servers breached by unknown scammers.
An employee of the firm clicked a suspicious link in an email that included malware which allowed the scammers to pose as the firm and carry on conversations to unsuspecting clients.
It was then they secured a payment of an undisclosed amount from a client who thought they were paying the firm’s legal fees.
SFPS Deputy Chief Chris Kettyle told myFM a single account was impacted.
The investigation’s ongoing and police aren’t yet sure if the scammers were local or from abroad.
myFM will continue to update the story as the investigation progresses.
