Willow Creek Stables operates on Christie Lake Road just outside of Perth and is dedicated to rescuing the critically endangered Newfoundland ponies.
Owner Korrine Jordan said her and her husband Wayne accidently fell into the business when they were introduced to a toothless and emancipated 29-year-old stallion named Rusty six years ago.
Jordan said they were given an ultimatum: take Rusty in and potentially save his bloodline, or he’s put down tomorrow. The decision was an easy one.
Willow Creek has since rescued 89 ponies, and is one of only two known sanctuaries worldwide.
Most of their ponies come to be housed there through animal cruelty investigations, outbidding meat buyers at auctions, and sometimes they’re surrendered.
Jordan spoke to myFM about what a typical day is like, how hard it can be to deal with horses who’ve experienced severe trauma and neglect, and how they keep the lights on in a wide-ranging interview.
