Smiths Falls has completed its first milestone towards a climate action plan.
They pieced together an emissions inventory to see how much greenhouse gas the town was emitting as both a government and a community.
Manager of Development Services Karl Grenke went over the corporation numbers first.
The town currently emits 1,706 tonnes of co2 per year and if they did nothing, the number would stretch past 1,900 based on expected population growth.
The community meanwhile emits over 90,000 tonnes per year, with 52% of that being from on-road transportation.
Grenke said it would only get worse if left alone.
Step 2 in the process is establishing emission reduction targets.
