Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute (SFDCI) is revolutionizing education with its geodesic dome, a high-tech space for hands-on learning and environmental projects.
Built in 2023, the 1,200-square-foot dome serves as a “Learning Lab” where students explore agriculture, technology, and sustainability.
Inside, students grow food and plants while experimenting with soil chemistry, companion planting, and innovative farming techniques. Plans are underway to introduce aquaponics this winter. Using 3D printers and environmental sensors, students will design automated systems for watering plants.
The dome’s energy-efficient design includes insulated concrete foundations, radiant heating, and exhaust fans, creating a comfortable, eco-friendly learning environment.
At SFDCI, one science class even transformed the dome into a “lunar outpost,” merging creativity and education under its futuristic roof.
