The Village of Westport is considering a move to single-tier municipality status, following an analysis of potential savings based on data from Gananoque and Prescott, two separated municipalities.
Westport’s staff is pushing for a feasibility study to determine the economic impact and viability of the shift.
Officials have already consulted the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, confirming the process under the Municipal Act and Ontario regulations. The restructuring would involve creating a detailed proposal, including governance changes, and holding public consultations before submission to the minister for approval.
While some services like EMS and social services would still be provided by the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville (UCLG) at a contracted cost, Westport would take on new responsibilities, including road and stormwater management.
The village aims to balance financial benefits with the increased workload. Residents are encouraged to follow updates on public meetings and contribute to the discussion as plans progress.
